Krill Oil Versus Fish Oil - Is There Any Significant Difference Between the Two?

There has been an ongoing krill oil versus fish oil argument in the recent times; this debate was initiated by those who feel that krill oil is a better option. So, this article is going to look into the two sides of the argument to ascertain whether the two sources of omega 3 are the same or whether one is better than the other.

Vitamin Fish Oil

Supporters of krill oil are claiming that it is the new ' miracle oil' and there has been several media reviews in support of that. That is not surprising at all because, it has become something of a trend for one substance/ product to surface as a ' miracle pill' for all disease once in a while; hence the emergence of krill oil as the 'new kid on the block' is one of such trends.

Vitamin Fish Oil

However, when you look at krill oil versus fish oil the two critically and objectively, the truth begins to emerge. Krill oil and fish oil are good sources of omega 3 fatty acids because they both are rich in DHA and EPA (the two beneficial components of omega 3).

For starters, krill is a small shrimp-like sea creature; it is actually the food base for most of the sea creatures. Most supporters of krill oil will be quick to tell you that it is pure (doesn't contain toxic impurities); however what they will not tell you is that krill fishing is not regulated, hence, it is being over-fished right now and that could create a lot of problem in the eco-system (sea life food chain). So, if you really care about the environment you would go for fish oil because most of the fish are gotten from areas that regulate their fishing.

It is also important to point out that fish that are gotten from an area like the pristine waters of New Zealand do not contain much toxins; secondly purifying the oils that are derived from such fish by molecular distillation also helps to remove the toxins, thereby making the oil pure and safe for your consumption. The bottom line is this; krill oil is a good source of omega 3 but is not better than fish oil.

In fact some fish such as Hoki contain higher amounts of DHA than krill; remember that DHA is the 'powerhouse' of omega 3. Remember that DHA makes up 30% of the human brain; it can also be converted to anti-inflammatory agent called Resolvin D2, which is very useful for heart health among other numerous health benefits.

The truth is, the quality of any omega 3 supplement is determined by the amount of DHA it contains and the level of purity; and in the case of krill oil versus fish oil, the two are more or less at par in these two areas. All you need do is find a good brand, for instance, the brand of fish oil I personally take is made with a blend of oils form Hoki and Tuna fish. It contains high amount of dha (280mg per 1000mg capsule) and it is molecularly distilled.

They also claim that because krill oil is in phospholipids form that it is more bio-available (easily absorbed by your body) than fish oil; however, the truth is that fish oil supplements that are in ethyl ester form are also highly bio-available.

All I can say is that the krill oil versus fish oil debate is a sort of marketing strategy initiated by the manufacturers of this so called 'latest miracle' in health care.
