Choosing the Wrong Fish Oil Vitamins Could Cost You Your Health!

Getting the wrong fish oil can put your health at risk--which is the opposite of what your are trying to do when you take an Omega-3 fish oil vitamin.

Vitamin Fish Oil

Be sure you read your labels carefully, and look for these statements, which will help you pick the right productl, while avoiding marketing hype.

Vitamin Fish Oil

First look for an Omega-3 fish oil that is molecularly distilled.

Look for molecularly distilled omega-3 fish oil, or purchase oils that comes from wild-harvested fish, tested free from unwanted heavy metals and contaminants.

Molecular distillation is a process by which toxins are separated from the fish oils, removing unwanted pollutants such as heavy metals, PCB's, dioxins and pesticides.

Because toxins are largely stored in the fatty tissues of fish, and "fatty" fish have the greatest health benefit, it is important to remove health risks associated with impurities you may find in your softgels or liquid.

Does your fish oil contain vitamin E?

The next thing I look for is a small amount of Vitamin E added to the oil to preserve freshness. Fish have delicate oils that are prone to oxidation, and become rancid quickly. Vitamin E acts as a stabilizer and prevents rancidity in the oil. To promote further freshness store your supplements in the refrigerator.

Know your levels of DHA and EPA.

Also important to know is the level of DHA and EPA-- two omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oils--you're getting per in each fish oil capsule.

These DHA and EPA amounts should be clearly listed on the supplement facts portion of the label. Personally, I prefer a fish oil softgel that provides a combined level of 500 mg EPA%2BDHA per capsule. I prefer this because the daily recommended amount of DHA%2BEPA for optimal health benefits is approximately 1,000 mg. per day.

Get enteric-coated softgles.

Taking two softgels is much more convenient that taking five or six fish oil vitamins, in my opinion.

I do recommend an enteric-coated softgel, which the label will claim, and I say this for two reasons.

1. Softgels are easier that hard-edged capsules, to swallow.

2. Enteric coating on the softgels means the capsule will break down in your small intestine, not your stomach, preventing fish aftertaste and odor.

Price.

In terms of price, at the time of writing this, a top quality Omega-3 fish oil costs about -40 per bottle of 120 softgels (1,000 mg size). Depending on how many you take, you'll be able to calculate your costs. But, if you take two per day, and get your 1,000 mg of EPA%2BDHA in those two softgels, then that bottle will last you 60 days--so, you may divide the price by two and calculate your monthy cost that way.

Look for products that guarantee their purity and potency, and have a third party testing facility do an independent "Certificate of Analysis", to verify that label claims . This is another important point to check out when buying an omega-3 vitamin.

No need to overpay on fish oil, but also, be suspect of products that are selling for "next-to-nothing". If you look closer, you'll likely see they are not molecularly distilled and don't pass purity tests.

This should get you started on looking for a fish oil that can give you the best of its benefits, without the risks of taking an inferior product.

To your good health!
