When it comes to buying Omega-3 fish oil vitamins, a lot of people just buy the cheapest one they can find, which is not always the smartest way to go. Here's why.
Fish oils are rich in the Omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. The most recent medical research indicated that a daily combined total of 1,000 mg EPA plus DHA is required to obtain health benefits from fish oil.
Vitamin Fish Oil
If you read the supplement labels, you'll find that the amount of EPA and DHA in each fish oil softgel can vary dramatically. This is true not only because softgels come in different sizes, but also true because fish oil softgels of the same size most often have different DHA plus EPA levels.
For example, I take a fish oil from Miley Labs, which is the brand I've used for a few years now. In their product, each fish oil softgel contains 500 mg combined DHA%2BEPA. So, a 120 count bottle lasts me two months. Pretty easy to calculate that. And the cost of their fish oil supplements is someplace around .00 for a top quality supplement.
Now, let's say I go to a Big Box retailer and buy an Omega-3 fish oil. 120 softgels for .00.
Buying on price alone, I'd think I was saving money at this point. But read on...
Now, I read my Big Box fish oil label, and find out that there's a combined total of 200 mg EPA plus DHA per softgel. That means I'll need to take five of these per day, just to get to my goal of 1,000 mg EPA%2BDHA, daily. That means that my 120 fish oil softgel bottle will last me 24 days (120/5=24).
Now, in order to have 60 days' worth of my Big Box Brand fish oil, I'll need to buy 2.5 bottles of their brand, at .00 per bottle. So 2.5 multiplied by .00 will be exactly .00.
That's .00 for the "cheaper" brand, versus .00 for the higher quality brand, based on a 60 day supply, delivering 1,000 mg EPA%2BDHA each day.
Over the course of a year, you'd spend 0 on the cheaper brand, and 8 on the better quality brand!
It pays to read labels and this is just another example of how looking at only one aspect of a product will often not tell a fraction of the true story.
